DSI Newsletters, Issue 20: Benefits of Volunteering in a Drug Study ![]() Medical experimentation dates back to Galen (130-201 AD), who is credited with the initiation of the experimental science of medicine. Beginning early in the 19th century, modern medical experimentation with drug studies experienced a paradigm change. It intended to provide a benefit to research subject volunteers and to make sure we first do no harm. No longer was research just done purely for the advancement of medical knowledge with the ends justifying the means. The person who steps forward to be first is guaranteed that they will be treated with respect and their rights and welfare will be continually guarded with codified systematic rules. Even if the product they're on is a placebo, we can vouch for our research process to have a "rescue" medicine or parameter that will watch your good health. Many people are discovering the benefits of volunteering in a drug study. You and your medical condition receive very close attention, more than is possible with usual care. The opportunity to learn more about yourself, to improve your health, and to benefit society is ever present in a drug study. ![]() |
